Montford Point Marine Memorial: A Meaningful Place to Visit in Jacksonville, NC

Montford Point Marine Memorial: A Meaningful Place to Visit in Jacksonville, NC

A beautiful outdoor memorial honoring the legacy of the first Black Marines

If you’re visiting Jacksonville, North Carolina, I definitely recommend taking some time to visit Lejeune Memorial Gardens, especially the Montford Point Marine Memorial.

This is one of those places that is peaceful, beautiful, and meaningful all at the same time. The memorial honors the legacy of the Montford Point Marines, the first Black Marines who trained at Montford Point between 1942 and 1949.

One of the first things you notice is the powerful bronze Marine statue positioned on an incline. The memorial also features a wall of approximately 20,000 stars representing the Montford Point Marines who served.

The words “They Arrived. They Served. They Lived.” are incorporated into the memorial, and they really make you stop and reflect on the history and sacrifices represented here.

The Montford Point Marine Memorial is part of Lejeune Memorial Gardens, which also includes several other memorials honoring members of the military and those who made sacrifices for our country.

📍 Location: 109 Montford Landing Road, Jacksonville, NC

There is free parking available near the entrance, and the gardens provide an outdoor setting where you can take your time walking around, reading the informational displays, and experiencing the different memorials.

My Review

I really enjoyed visiting this area. It’s not simply a place to take a quick picture and leave — there is history here that makes you want to slow down and learn more.

If you’re in Jacksonville, North Carolina, I think it’s worth adding Lejeune Memorial Gardens and the Montford Point Marine Memorial to your itinerary. It’s a beautiful outdoor stop, and you can combine it with visits to the other memorials in the gardens.

If you're visiting in the fall, I would definitely recommend dressing in layers. Since you'll be spending time outdoors, a light sweater, cardigan, jacket, or other easy-to-remove layer can make your visit much more comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day.
