A Stylish Guide to Madrid, Day Trips & Exploring Beyond the City
Madrid, Spain â A Tuttilove Travel Guide
Madrid is one of those cities where you can spend your days exploring grand architecture, beautiful plazas, museums, shopping streets and restaurantsâand then use the city as a home base for exploring some incredible places outside the capital.
During my trip to Madrid, I explored the city and also took day trips beyond Madrid. From Toledo and Segovia to the beautiful streets and plazas of Madrid itself, there is so much to experience.
This guide is based on my experience and the places captured in my travel photos.
⨠5 PLACES YOU MUST SEE IN MADRID

1. Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor is one of Madrid's most recognizable historic squares and sits in the heart of the city's old center.
This is a place where I recommend slowing down, taking pictures, sitting at a cafĂŠ and simply enjoying the atmosphere.
Travel tip: Come during the day and then return in the evening if you have time. The atmosphere changes completely as the city lights come on.
2. Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is another Madrid landmark that you will probably find yourself passing through more than once.
It is one of the city's busiest central squares and is home to the famous Kilometre Zero marker and the clock at Casa de Correos. EsMadrid
It's also a great starting point for exploring nearby streets, shops and restaurants.
Tuttilove tip: Wear comfortable shoes because this part of Madrid is perfect for exploring on foot.
3. Gran VĂa
If you love fashion, shopping, architecture and city energy, put Gran VĂa on your list.
The boulevard is one of the places that really gives you that big-city Madrid feeling. My photos from Gran VĂa capture exactly what I loved about walking through the cityâbeautiful buildings, people everywhere and the energy of Madrid after dark.
Style tip: This is a great place to wear an outfit you feel good in because there are photo opportunities everywhere.
4. Royal Palace of Madrid
The Royal Palace is one of Madrid's major historic attractions and is highlighted by Madrid's official tourism office as one of the city's essential sights. EsMadrid
Give yourself enough time to explore the area around the palace rather than simply checking it off your list.
Tuttilove tip: Combine the palace area with nearby historic streets and plazas for a full day of sightseeing.
5. El Retiro Park
El Retiro is Madrid's famous green escape and part of the UNESCO-listed landscape of Paseo del Prado and Retiro. EsMadrid
It's a wonderful place to take a break from sightseeing, walk, relax and take pictures.
If you're spending several days in Madrid, don't skip this one.
đ 5 DAY TRIPS & TOWNS TO EXPLORE FROM MADRID

One of my favorite things about Madrid is that you don't have to stay within the city limits for your entire vacation.
Madrid's location and transportation network make it a convenient base for exploring nearby destinations. Spain's official tourism site specifically highlights several nearby World Heritage destinations and other towns that can be reached by train, bus or car. Spain Tourism
1. Toledo
This is a must for your Madrid itinerary.
Toledo is known as the City of Three Cultures, reflecting its Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritage. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spain Tourism
See the:
- Toledo Cathedral
- AlcĂĄzar
- Jewish Quarter
- Synagogues
- Mosque of Cristo de la Luz
- Puerta de Bisagra
- Historic streets
- Scenic viewpoints
From Madrid, Toledo is accessible by high-speed train, with the journey taking around half an hour. Spain Tourism
2. Segovia
Segovia is another fantastic day trip.
The Roman Aqueduct, Cathedral and AlcĂĄzar of Segovia are among the city's major attractions. Segovia's old quarter and aqueduct are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spain Tourism
And don't leave without trying one of the foods the city is famous forâcochinillo, or roast suckling pig. Spain Tourism
3. Ăvila
If medieval architecture interests you, consider Ăvila.
The city is famous for its remarkably preserved medieval walls and historic center. Madrid's official tourism site includes Ăvila among its recommended World Heritage day trips. EsMadrid
4. AlcalĂĄ de Henares
This is a wonderful option if you want something a little different.
AlcalĂĄ de Henares is closely associated with Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, and its historic university and old town are UNESCO-listed. EsMadrid
5. Aranjuez
Aranjuez is another easy escape from Madrid, particularly if you enjoy beautiful gardens, palaces and royal history.
The Royal Palace and Gardens of Aranjuez are among the destinations recommended by Madrid's official tourism office. EsMadrid
đ OUR MADRID DAY-TRIP EXPERIENCE
One of the things I wanted to include in this guide is our experience taking an organized tour bus.
We used a tour bus for a Toledo + Segovia excursion, leaving Madrid in the morning and returning in the evening.
Our ticket shows a 9:00 AM departure from Plaza de Neptuno and a 7:00 PM return, giving us a full day to explore beyond Madrid.
For me, this was one of the easiest ways to experience multiple destinations without worrying about driving, parking or figuring out every connection ourselves.
Tuttilove tip: If you're interested in visiting several towns during one trip, compare an organized day tour with taking the train independently. Both approaches can workâthe right choice depends on whether you prefer convenience and a planned itinerary or more independence.
đď¸ HOW TO BUY TRAIN & TRANSPORTATION TICKETS
Madrid â Toledo
Renfe operates the high-speed Avant service between Madrid and Toledo. Tickets can be purchased through Renfe, and the official Renfe route page provides current schedules and fares. Renfe
Check MadridâToledo trains on Renfe
Madrid â Segovia
Renfe operates services between Madrid and Segovia, including high-speed trains to Segovia Guiomar station. Renfe
Check MadridâSegovia trains on Renfe
My advice before buying
Always check the date, departure station, arrival station and return time before purchasing.
For popular day trips, I would also check the schedule before your travel day rather than assuming trains run at the same times every day.
đ GETTING AROUND MADRID
Madrid is very easy to explore using a combination of walking, Metro, buses, taxis and commuter trains. EsMadrid
The official Tourist Travel Pass offers unlimited public transportation for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 days. Zone A covers Madrid city, while Zone T covers a much larger area. EsMadrid
For a trip focused primarily on central Madrid, look at Zone A. If you're planning to travel farther around the region using covered public transportation, compare the Zone T option.

đ WHAT TO PACK FOR MADRID

Madrid is a city where you'll probably do a lot of walking, especially if you want to experience the plazas, shopping streets, historic neighborhoods and attractions.
I recommend packing:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A lightweight jacket
- Layers
- A scarf
- Crossbody bag
- Sunglasses
- Comfortable pants or leggings
- A few stylish outfits for dinners and photos
- A small day bag
- Portable phone charger
And remember: comfortable doesn't have to mean boring.
That's one of the things I love about travelâyou can explore all day and still look put together.
đ¸ MADRID THROUGH MY CAMERA

Some of my favorite Madrid memories came from simply walking around and letting the city unfold.
From Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol to Gran VĂa, restaurants, flamenco performances and day trips outside the city, Madrid gave me a combination of history, fashion, food and culture that made the trip memorable.
And that's what I want Tuttilove Travel to captureânot just where to go, but what it feels like to actually experience a destination.
â¤ď¸ MY TUTTILOVE MADRID TIPS

1. Don't try to see everything in one day.
Madrid deserves time.
2. Walk whenever you can.
Some of the best discoveries happen between the major attractions.
3. Leave Madrid at least one day for a day trip.
Toledo and Segovia are particularly convenient options. Spain Tourism
4. Wear comfortable shoes.
You'll thank yourself later.
5. Leave room for food.
Don't schedule every minute.

6. Take picturesâbut also put the phone down.
Some of the best travel memories aren't the ones you planned.
