Empty Sky: New Jersey’s 9/11 Memorial You Should Know About

When we think about September 11, 2001, most of us immediately think of the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan. But did you know that New Jersey has its own beautiful and deeply moving memorial?

Located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, Empty Sky: New Jersey's September 11th Memorial honors the 750 people with ties to New Jersey who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Dedicated on September 11, 2011, the memorial was designed by Jessica Jamroz and Frederic Schwartz. It features two towering stainless-steel walls, each 210 feet long, representing the width of the original World Trade Center towers.

The names of those being remembered are engraved along the walls, which frame a view toward Lower Manhattan and the place where the Twin Towers once stood.

Walking between these walls is a powerful experience. The memorial offers a quiet place to reflect, remember, and honor the lives lost that day.

One of the most remarkable things about visiting Empty Sky is its location.

From Liberty State Park, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the Hudson River, and the Statue of Liberty.

It is a beautiful place to walk, take photographs, appreciate the history, and experience a different perspective of New York City.
