🌴 Puerto Rico Travel Review: Where to Stay, What to Eat & What to Do

Your Tuttilove Guide to Experiencing San Juan and Beyond

Puerto Rico is one of those destinations where you can have several completely different vacations on the same island. You can spend your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the city, eating incredible local food, dancing at night—and then rent a car and head out to discover mountains, forests, small coastal towns, and hidden food spots.

If you're thinking about visiting Puerto Rico, especially during the fall, here's my Tuttilove guide to where to stay, where to eat, what to do, and a few things I think every traveler should know before going.

🏨 Where Should You Stay in Puerto Rico?

If this is your first trip and you want to experience San Juan, two areas I would look at first are Condado and Isla Verde.

They're both convenient for travelers who want beaches, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and easy access to the airport.

🌊 Option 1: Condado

Condado is a great choice if you want to be in the middle of the action.

It's an oceanfront neighborhood with beaches, restaurants, boutiques, nightlife, and plenty of hotels within walking distance.

This is a good area for someone who wants to walk out of their hotel and have plenty of things happening around them.

Hilton options to consider

If you prefer Hilton properties, there are several options in and around the San Juan area.

Caribe Hilton is a beachfront resort option, while The Condado Plaza Hotel is located directly in the Condado Beach area. Hilton also lists Hilton Garden Inn San Juan Condado among its San Juan beach hotels.

Another option worth looking at is Condado Palm Inn San Juan, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. It's about a block from the beach and close to restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and other Condado attractions.

Tuttilove tip: When choosing your hotel, don't just look at the room. Look at the location. Being close to restaurants, beaches, and attractions can make your vacation much easier.

🌴 Option 2: Isla Verde

If being close to the beach and airport is important to you, take a look at Isla Verde.

Isla Verde is actually in Carolina, immediately east of San Juan. The area is known for its beach, hotels, restaurants, and easy airport access.

One Hilton option is Embassy Suites by Hilton San Juan Hotel & Casino, which is in the Isla Verde tourist area and about a block and a half from Isla Verde Beach.

This can be especially convenient if you don't want to spend a lot of time getting to and from the airport.

🍽️ Where to Eat: Don't Miss La Placita

Now let's talk about one of the places I would put on your Puerto Rico itinerary:

❤️ La Placita de Santurce

La Placita is one of those places where the experience changes depending on what time you visit.

During the day, it's a historic market where you can experience local food, produce, restaurants, and the neighborhood atmosphere.

Then, as the sun goes down, everything changes.

The streets around La Placita become filled with restaurants, bars, music, dancing, and people socializing. Salsa, merengue, reggaetón, bomba and live music can all be part of the experience.

And that's what I love about it—you can experience food, culture, music and nightlife in one place.

🌞 Go during the day

Come hungry!

You can find Puerto Rican favorites such as alcapurrias, empanadillas and bacalaítos, along with restaurants serving traditional Puerto Rican food.

🌙 Come back at night

At night, La Placita becomes a social destination.

You can:

💃 Dance
🎶 Listen to live music
🍽️ Have dinner
👯 Meet people
🎤 Find different entertainment
🌴 Enjoy the outdoor atmosphere

If you're visiting for nightlife, Thursday through Sunday tend to be particularly lively.

Tuttilove tip: Wear comfortable shoes! If you're going to walk around, explore different spots and dance, you'll be glad you did.

And when you're heading home at night, consider using a rideshare or taxi rather than worrying about parking and driving.

🌳 Things to Do: Explore Beyond the City

One of the best things about staying in the San Juan area is that you don't have to spend your entire vacation inside the city.

You can use San Juan as your home base and take day trips.

🌿 Visit El Yunque National Forest

If you only have time for one major nature excursion, consider El Yunque National Forest.

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest within the U.S. National Forest System and covers nearly 29,000 acres across northeastern Puerto Rico. It offers mountain scenery, rivers, hiking opportunities and incredible tropical vegetation.

And remember: this is a rainforest.

Rain is part of the experience!

Check current conditions and access information before you go because the Forest Service manages visitor capacity and posts alerts when conditions or construction affect access.

🏖️ Explore Puerto Rico's Beaches

If you're staying in San Juan, you have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the coast.

You can explore beaches around Condado, Isla Verde and other parts of the San Juan metro area, then venture farther out if you have a rental car.

Just remember that not every beach has the same swimming conditions. For example, Discover Puerto Rico notes that some areas of Condado Beach can have strong currents, so travelers should follow local conditions and use lifeguarded areas when available.

🚗 Want to Explore Beyond San Juan?

This is where I think Puerto Rico gets really exciting.

If you have several days and want to see more of the island, consider renting a car and heading outside the San Juan area.

🌺 Mayagüez

Head west to Mayagüez, known as La Sultana del Oeste.

It's a cultural and historic city with Plaza de Colón, the historic Teatro Yagüez, restaurants, bakeries, shopping and access to the broader west coast.

The west coast also gives you access to destinations such as Rincón, Cabo Rojo, Isabela and La Parguera.

And if you're a food lover, the west has plenty to explore—from local restaurants to food trucks and beachside kiosks.

🦐 Don't Forget Patillas

If you're looking for a different side of Puerto Rico, put Patillas on your road-trip list.

Patillas is where the mountains meet the coast, and it's known for beaches, natural swimming areas, forests and local food.

And yes—come hungry.

Along the coastal PR-3 route, you'll find local chinchorros and restaurants serving fritters, fresh fish and seafood.

You can also explore places such as Villa Pesquera Beach and Charco Azul, a natural pool in the Carite Forest.

This is the kind of place I love recommending when someone says, “I want to see more than the typical tourist areas.”

🌦️ Traveling to Puerto Rico in the Fall? Pack for the Weather!

Here's something I definitely want you to remember.

Puerto Rico is warm year-round, but fall is part of the island's wetter season.

The rainy season generally runs from April through November, with August, September and October typically receiving the most rainfall. Showers can be brief and followed by sunshine—but you should still be prepared.

And the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30.

That doesn't mean you should cancel your trip. It means you should travel prepared and pay attention to the forecast.

❤️ My Tuttilove Puerto Rico Travel Tips

1. Don't stay in the hotel the whole time.

Puerto Rico has so much to see beyond the resort.

2. Experience San Juan both during the day and at night.

The city has a completely different personality after dark.

3. Try local food.

Don't limit yourself to the restaurants inside your hotel. Explore local restaurants, markets, kiosks and chinchorros.

4. Give yourself time to explore.

If you have a rental car, you can discover parts of the island that you might otherwise miss. Discover Puerto Rico notes that rideshare availability becomes more limited outside the metro area, which is one reason a rental car can be useful for exploring farther afield.

5. Pay attention to your surroundings.

Just as you would anywhere else, stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and at night. Keep your belongings secure, stay with the people you're traveling with, and use reputable transportation.

6. Check the weather before heading out.

This is especially important during fall. A sunny morning doesn't necessarily mean you won't get a tropical shower later.

7. Don't forget the poncho!

Seriously. 😂

A little rain shouldn't ruin your vacation. Being prepared means you can throw on your poncho, keep exploring and keep enjoying the island.

🌴 The Tuttilove Way to Experience Puerto Rico

For me, Puerto Rico isn't just about checking famous attractions off a list.

It's about the whole experience.

It's waking up near the beach.

It's finding a little local restaurant.

It's eating something you've never tried before.

It's walking around San Juan.

It's listening to music at La Placita.

It's spending a day surrounded by the rainforest in El Yunque.

It's taking a road trip to Mayagüez.

It's stopping for seafood in Patillas.

It's discovering another beautiful beach.

And it's realizing that sometimes the best memories happen when you leave the itinerary open enough to discover something unexpected.

That's the Puerto Rico I want to share with you through Tuttilove. ❤️🌴
