Shapewear After 40: Which Style Is Right for You?
I’ve been wearing shapewear since I was young, so I’ve tried many different styles over the years—from lightweight smoothing shorts to much stronger compression pieces.
And one thing I’ve learned is this: not all shapewear is meant to do the same job.
I have always had a special appreciation for Colombian shapewear. In my experience, it is some of the best when it comes to quality, construction, shaping and style. Colombian shapewear is known for creating a more sculpted silhouette while still paying attention to the way a woman’s natural curves look.
That said, there are many excellent shapewear brands today, and sometimes you don’t need maximum compression at all. The best shapewear is really the one that works for your body, your outfit and how you want to feel.
Lace-Trim Shaping Shorts: For Everyday Smoothing
For everyday wear, I love a softer shaping short.
This type of shapewear is perfect when you simply want to smooth the tummy, hips and upper thighs underneath dresses, skirts or pants without feeling overly restricted.
The lace details also make them feel prettier and more feminine than traditional shapewear.
Best for:
Everyday outfits, dresses, workwear and lighter fabrics.
High-Waist Shaping Shorts: For More Support
When I want more structure, I prefer a high-waisted shaping short.
The higher waistband helps smooth the midsection and waist while the longer short gives additional support through the hips and thighs. This is especially helpful underneath fitted dresses or clothing where you want a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette.
Some styles also include strategic shaping around the back to enhance your natural curves rather than flattening them.
Best for:
Fitted dresses, special occasions, trousers and outfits that need additional smoothing.
Strong Compression Isn’t Always Better
This is something I have learned after years of wearing shapewear.
You do not always need the strongest garment you can find.
For everyday wear, comfort matters. You should be able to sit, walk, eat and enjoy your day without constantly thinking about what you are wearing underneath your clothes.
For special occasions, however, a stronger shaping garment can give you that extra support and confidence.
The goal isn’t to change your body.
It’s to create a smooth foundation underneath your clothes so that your outfit fits and falls beautifully.
My Shapewear Rule
Choose your shapewear based on the outfit.
A relaxed dress may only need light smoothing. A fitted cocktail dress may benefit from stronger waist and tummy control. Pants may work beautifully with a seamless shaping short.
And most importantly—buy your correct size.
Going smaller does not necessarily create more shaping. Often it just creates discomfort and unwanted lines.
At Tuttilove, I want shapewear to feel like another styling tool in your wardrobe—something that helps your clothes look their best while still allowing you to feel comfortable, feminine and confident.
Because after 40, style isn’t about hiding your body. It’s about knowing exactly how to dress it.
