Cartagena, Colombia: Beyond the Colorful Streets
Historic charm, Caribbean beaches, island adventures, and unforgettable evenings.
There is something special about Cartagena, Colombia. From its colorful streets and historic architecture to its beautiful Caribbean coastline, this is a destination where you can experience a little bit of everything.
During our visit, we explored the historic center, visited the famous fortress, spent time enjoying the beach, and discovered just how much Cartagena has to offer.
Here are some of my favorite experiences, along with a few things I wish I had known before visiting.
1. Explore Cartagena's Historic Center

One of the first things I recommend is spending time walking through Cartagena's historic center, also known as the Walled City.
The colorful buildings, balconies, historic streets, restaurants, and lively atmosphere make it such a beautiful place to explore.
You don't necessarily need a complicated itinerary. Sometimes the best part is simply walking around, discovering little corners, taking photographs, and enjoying the atmosphere.
My tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and give yourself plenty of time to explore. Cartagena can be very hot!
2. Visit the Historic Fortress

Another memorable part of our visit was exploring Cartagena's famous fortress, Castillo San Felipe de Barajas.
Built during the Spanish colonial period, this impressive fortress is an important part of Cartagena's history.
If you enjoy history, architecture, and discovering the stories behind the places you visit, this is definitely worth including in your itinerary.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and your camera.
3. Enjoy a Relaxing Caribbean Beach Day

One thing I particularly enjoyed about Cartagena was the beach experience.
You can spend the day relaxing by the water without having to sit directly under the hot Caribbean sun.
At some beaches, you'll find shaded beach tents, umbrellas, and carpas available for rent.

What I really appreciated was the food service.
You can arrange for someone to prepare or bring your lunch directly to your beach area. You choose what you would like, agree on a time, and enjoy your meal without having to leave your spot.
For me, that made the experience so much more relaxing.
My tip: Before accepting any beach service, confirm the complete price, what's included, and when your food will be delivered.
4. Take a Boat to the Nearby Islands

Cartagena is also a wonderful starting point for exploring the nearby Caribbean islands, including the Rosario Islands.
You can book boat excursions and spend time enjoying beautiful beaches and island scenery.
However, I learned something important during our trip: book your island excursion in advance!
One day, we wanted to take a boat trip, but we couldn't find tickets for the departure we wanted.
Many boats operate on specific schedules, so waiting until the last minute can mean missing the experience.
Here is what I recommend:
-
Compare different excursion companies and prices.
-
Ask what kind of boat you'll be traveling on.
-
Confirm that the boat is in good condition and has proper safety equipment.
-
Ask about departure and return times.
-
Find out whether lunch, beach access, and other fees are included.
-
Book with an authorized operator and confirm your reservation in advance.
Sometimes the least expensive option isn't necessarily the best one. Comfort, safety, and reliability matter, especially when you're spending time out on the water.
5. Experience Cartagena After Dark

Cartagena is not just a daytime destination.
In the evening, the city takes on an entirely different personality.
You can head toward the lively historic center, enjoy music and nightlife, or choose a beautiful restaurant for a more relaxed evening.
I love having those options when I travel.
Some evenings you want to be in the middle of the action. Other evenings, a lovely dinner and a beautiful atmosphere are exactly what you need.
Cartagena offers both.

What I enjoyed most about Cartagena was the variety of experiences.

My biggest recommendation is to plan your island excursions ahead of time, compare prices, and leave room in your itinerary to simply enjoy the city.
