10 Things Every Woman Over 40 Should Do Before the Year Ends

A little reset for your style, confidence, home, adventures—and what comes next.

There is something about the final months of the year that makes us look at our lives differently.

We start thinking about what we accomplished, what we postponed, what we outgrew, and—maybe most importantly—what we still want.

And when you are over 40, that reflection can feel different than it did when you were 25.

You know yourself better now.

You’ve lived enough life to know that not everything deserves your energy. You’ve probably changed more than once. Your body may have changed. Your style may have changed. Your priorities definitely have.

And that is exactly why I don’t believe this season of life should be about slowing down.

I think it can be about becoming more intentional.

Not starting over.

Starting from experience.

So before another year ends, here are ten things I believe every woman over 40 should consider doing—not because you need to reinvent your entire life overnight, but because a few intentional changes can make the next chapter feel very different.

1. Clear Out What No Longer Fits Your Life

And I don’t only mean clothes.

Sometimes we hold onto things because they once belonged to a version of us that no longer exists.

A dress you haven’t worn in five years. A room filled with things you don’t use. A commitment you dread every week. A habit that made sense years ago but doesn’t anymore.

There is something freeing about asking yourself:

Do I still want this in the life I am creating now?

If the answer is no, give yourself permission to release it.

You don’t need to erase your past. You simply don’t have to carry all of it into your future.

2. Refresh Your Personal Style

One of my favorite things about style after 40 is that we finally start understanding the difference between fashion and personal style.

You don’t need to wear every trend.

And you certainly don’t have to dress according to some imaginary list of what a woman “your age” should wear.

Instead, start asking better questions.

How do I want to feel when I walk into a room?

Confident? Elegant? Relaxed? Modern? Feminine? Bold?

Then build from there.

Sometimes your entire wardrobe doesn’t need changing. It may simply need a few pieces that make everything else feel current again—a beautiful blazer, great jeans, a scarf, a structured bag, a pair of boots, or a coat you’ll reach for constantly.

This is exactly what I want the Tuttilove fashion experience to help women do: find wearable pieces and styling ideas that make getting dressed feel exciting again.

3. Plan One Trip or New Experience

You don’t have to book a three-week European vacation.

Although…I certainly wouldn’t discourage it.

Your new experience could be a weekend somewhere you’ve never visited, a day trip, a restaurant you’ve wanted to try, a solo museum afternoon, a class, a concert, or finally visiting that place you keep saving on Pinterest.

Travel changes us because it interrupts routine.

It reminds us that there are still places we haven’t seen, foods we haven’t tasted, streets we haven’t walked and versions of ourselves we haven’t met yet.

I’ve learned that waiting for the “perfect time” can become an excuse that lasts for years.

Pick one place.

Start researching it.

Give yourself something to look forward to.

And if travel is on your list, you can explore the destinations, hotels and experiences I recommend through my Tuttilove travel guides and Expedia recommendations.

4. Create a Simple Self-Care Routine

Self-care doesn’t have to mean an elaborate Sunday routine involving seventeen products and three hours you don’t have.

Sometimes it is much simpler.

It’s drinking your water.

Doing your skincare.

Taking a walk.

Protecting your sleep.

Making the doctor’s appointment you’ve postponed.

Sitting quietly with your coffee before the house wakes up.

The most useful self-care routine is not the most impressive one.

It is the one you will actually continue.

Choose two or three small things that make you feel better physically or emotionally and make them part of your normal life—not something you only do when you are exhausted.

5. Reconnect With Someone You Love

Life gets busy.

Months pass.

Then suddenly you realize you haven’t had a real conversation with someone you care about in far too long.

Send the text.

Make the call.

Plan the lunch.

Invite someone over for coffee.

And sometimes reconnecting is not about another person.

Sometimes it is about reconnecting with yourself.

The woman who loved to dance.

The woman who painted.

The woman who used to read every night.

The woman who wanted to learn another language.

She may still be there.

6. Organize One Space in Your Home

Do not start with the entire house.

That is how we turn a simple project into something overwhelming.

Choose one space.

A closet.

A bathroom drawer.

Your office.

Your kitchen pantry.

Your beauty products.

Your handbag collection.

Finish that one space completely.

I love the feeling of walking into a room after you’ve edited it down and made it useful again. Your home doesn’t need to look like a showroom. It should simply support the life you are living.

7. Learn Something Completely New

One of the biggest mistakes we can make as we get older is deciding that we already know who we are.

There is still so much room to surprise yourself.

Learn photography.

Try a new recipe every week.

Take a dance class.

Learn Canva.

Start gardening.

Take a language course before a trip.

Learn how to style your hair differently.

Start the business idea that has been sitting in your notes app for two years.

Curiosity keeps life interesting.

And you are absolutely allowed to be a beginner again.

8. Take More Photos of Yourself

Women are often the people taking the photographs.

We photograph our children, our partners, our pets, our vacations and our food.

And somehow we disappear from our own memories.

Stop waiting until you lose ten pounds.

Stop waiting for better hair.

Stop waiting until you have the perfect outfit.

Take the photo.

Twenty years from now, you are not going to look at that picture and obsess over the tiny thing you criticized that day.

You’re going to see you.

Your life.

That moment.

Be in your own story.

9. Make One Bold Decision for YOU

There comes a point when you realize that constantly asking everyone else what they think can keep you from discovering what you think.

Maybe your bold decision is changing careers.

Starting a business.

Booking the trip.

Cutting your hair.

Wearing the dress.

Ending something.

Beginning something.

Saying no.

Or finally saying yes.

Bold does not always mean dramatic.

Sometimes the boldest decision is simply deciding that your own happiness deserves a place in the conversation.

If you are working on boundaries, confidence and letting go of other people’s expectations, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins is one book you may want to add to your reading list.

And for women thinking deeply about this stage of life, Learning to Love Midlife by Chip Conley is another book worth exploring.

10. Write Down What You Want Next

Not what everyone else expects.

Not what you were supposed to want at 30.

Not what looks impressive on social media.

What do you want next?

Take a notebook and write without editing yourself.

Where do you want to travel?

How do you want to dress?

What do you want your home to feel like?

Who do you want around you?

What do you want to learn?

What do you want to stop doing?

What would make the next year feel meaningful?

Sometimes we don’t need another productivity system.

We simply need to get quiet enough to hear ourselves again.

Your Next Chapter Does Not Have an Age Limit

One of the reasons I created Tuttilove is because I believe women need more reminders that life after 40—and after 50—can still be full of firsts.

First solo trip.

First business.

First time wearing something you never thought you could pull off.

First time finally choosing yourself.

You do not have to accomplish all ten things before December 31.

Pick one.

Then another.

Small changes have a funny way of becoming completely different lives.

And maybe that’s the real goal.

Not becoming someone new.

Becoming more of yourself.
