How to Find More Joy in Everyday Life
Joy doesn’t always arrive as something big.
Sometimes it looks like a quiet morning, a walk with no agenda, a conversation that makes you laugh, finally saying no to something that drains you, or simply noticing that today feels a little lighter than yesterday.
That is one reason I was drawn to Joy: 100 Affirmations for Happiness by Elicia Rose. The idea behind the book is simple: the way we speak to ourselves matters, and small shifts in our thinking can help us make more room for positivity, reflection, and personal growth.
The book includes 100 guided affirmations designed to help readers slow down, reflect, and become more intentional about the thoughts they carry through the day.
And that made me think about something I’ve learned more and more as I get older:
Joy is not always something we find. Sometimes it is something we practice.
Start With the Way You Speak to Yourself
One of the strongest ideas behind affirmation practice is becoming aware of your own internal voice.
We can be incredibly encouraging to the people we love while being much harder on ourselves.
Instead of beginning the day with thoughts like:
“I’m behind.”
“I should be doing more.”
“I don’t have enough time.”
Try replacing them with something gentler:
I have permission to move at my own pace.
I can make room for something good today.
I am allowed to enjoy the life I’m building.
That shift may seem small, but the tone you set with yourself can influence how you experience the rest of your day.
Make Space for a New Way of Thinking
One of the affirmations highlighted in the book is about creating space for a new way of thinking.
I love that idea because finding joy often requires us to loosen our grip on old beliefs.
Maybe you’ve spent years believing you always have to be productive.
Maybe you feel guilty resting.
Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that happiness can only come after you accomplish the next thing.
A new way of thinking might sound like:
Rest is productive too.
My life does not need to look perfect to be beautiful.
I can enjoy where I am while still working toward where I want to go.
That is where joy starts becoming less complicated.
Notice What Is Already Good
We spend so much time thinking about what needs fixing that it becomes easy to miss what is already working.
Try noticing three things that felt good today.
Maybe your coffee tasted especially good.
Maybe the weather was beautiful.
Maybe someone sent you a kind message.
Maybe you wore an outfit that made you feel like yourself.
These moments are small, but they count.
Joy grows when we start recognizing it.
Protect Your Peace
This is probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as I get older.
Not everything deserves your energy.
Not every disagreement needs your participation.
Not every invitation requires a yes.
Not every opinion about your life needs a response.
Sometimes finding more joy means removing a little pressure.
Less explaining.
Less comparing.
Less trying to please everyone.
More peace.
More boundaries.
More room to simply be yourself.
Build Tiny Joy Rituals
You don’t need to completely change your life to feel happier.
Create small rituals that give you something to look forward to.
Read a few pages with your morning coffee. Take a short walk without your phone. Light a candle while you get ready. Put on an outfit you love even when you aren’t going anywhere special. Write one encouraging sentence to yourself each morning. End the day by thinking of one thing that went well.
The smaller the ritual, the easier it is to actually keep doing it.
Choose Progress Over Perfection
Joy and perfection rarely live in the same place.
If we wait until the house is perfect, our body is perfect, our career is perfect, the bank account is perfect, or life finally feels completely organized, we may spend years postponing happiness.
There will always be something unfinished.
That doesn’t mean you have to postpone enjoying your life.
You can be growing and still be grateful.
You can be changing and still be proud of yourself.
You can want more and still appreciate what you already have.
A Little Daily Reminder
Maybe the goal isn’t to be happy every minute.
That isn’t realistic.
Maybe the goal is simply to become better at noticing joy when it appears — and to create more opportunities for it to show up.
That is what I like about Joy: 100 Affirmations for Happiness.
It offers small reminders to pause, reflect, and pay attention to the way we are speaking to ourselves.
And sometimes one good thought is enough to change the direction of an entire day.
Find Your Own Version of Joy
Your joy does not have to look like anyone else’s.
It might be travel.
It might be fashion.
It might be reading.
It might be family.
It might be quiet mornings, trying something new, decorating your home, taking care of yourself, or finally giving yourself permission to start over.
Whatever it is, make room for it.
Because life moves quickly.
And we deserve to actually enjoy some of it while we’re here.
Today’s reminder:
You don’t have to wait for life to become perfect before you allow yourself to feel joy.
